User Guide

What is the SOP for athletes?

Athlete uses Recovery Systems a part of their recovery regimen, managing discomfort or muscle soreness from training, by improving their lymphatic and circulatory systems. It’s one of the modalities they use to aid their recovery, other than sleep and nutrition.

Endurance Athletes (with no medical indication)

  1. Short training session (e.g. 90 mins swim/ 60 mins run/ 90 mins easy cycle):
    • 20 to 30 mins recovery on Mode B (Sequential)

2. Intensive training session (e.g. run of 90 mins or shorter interval session/ more than 90 mins hard or hilly bike ride/ 2 hours swim):

    • 40 to 60 mins recovery on Mode B (Sequential)

3. Frequency and timing of recovery session:

    • 1 session a day is good, 2 – 3 sessions a day for those under heavy training load will enhance recovery
    • Many people fall asleep during a session as the bodies parasympathetic system is activated (neurological recovery) so the last session before bed is likely to improve sleep quality
    • Weekends are a great time for 60-min recovery sessions

4. Warm-Up:

    • 10 to 20 mins before an event, this is a great idea in cooler climates where it may be otherwise difficult. Our muscle oxygen data has shown that in 8 to 10 mins on Recovery Systems is the equivalent of a 30-min warm-up

5. Pressure Recommendations:

    • Higher pressure isn’t necessarily better; blood volume varies based on the size of the person and other factors
    • Black Max Pro recommended settings between level 4 to level 6 to start off with, and then adjust the intensity level according to your comfort level as the treatment progresses
    • Leg cuffs – you should never be uncomfortable on your feet and legs, 140 to 180 mmhg in pressure should be comfortable for most users
    • Arm and Torso cuff – should be no more than 120 mmhg in pressure

* These are guidelines only for athletes and sportspersons.

What is the SOP for medical users?

Medical conditions and application may vary from case to case, please consult and follow your medical practitioner’s recommendation and guidelines before using it.

Is Recovery Systems designed for daily use?

Yes, many athletes and customers are using Recovery Systems once daily or a few sessions a day.

When to use it? What pressure? How often? How long should I use?

Recovery Systems can be used any time, most treatments are between 20 to 30 minutes, at your preferred pressure level, longer if required and multiple times a day if required.

Can Recovery Systems be used for a warm-up?

Yes, our data has shown that 8 to 10 minutes as warmup on our Recovery Systems will bring your muscle oxygen up to a point that would normally take 30 minutes to reach.

See the graph below, the biggest boost in muscle oxygen activity occurs in the first 8 to 10 mins treatment on Recovery Systems.

What are the recommended pressure levels and treatment times?

A general rule of thumb for athletes is to set the pressure based on their comfort levels. For medical cases, please consult your medical practitioner for a recommendation as the pressure level should be adjusted to the individual’s level of comfort, tolerance and response to treatment under medical guidance.

There is also no standard consensus on the frequency of treatments. Depending on the individual situation, treatment duration of 30 minutes to two hours and the frequency could be 1 to 4 times daily based on the needs. Before bedtime often promotes sleep quality.

How to use it?

All our models are user-friendly and simple to use. Simply follow these 4 simple steps:

  1. Plug & Connect – Plug the control unit into the power source (except our Black Max Pro which is our battery version). Connect the cuffs hose connector into the control unit.
  2. Sit and Zip – Find a comfortable sitting or lying position, slip into the cuffs and zip them up.
  3. Set & Start – Select your preferred treatment mode, timer and pressure level, then Start.
  4. Rest & Relax – Relax and enjoy the treatment. Read a book, sip your coffee or look at your phone. Or even taking a short nap while using it.

Also, you may adjust the pressure levels and duration in the midst of treatment.

What happens if I fall asleep when using it?
How do I clean it?

The cuffs are easy to maintain and clean, simply wipe with mild antiseptic soap and water solution with a damp cloth.

How It Works

What is Intermittent Pneumatic Compression? How does it work?

In simple terms, it’s an active compression to speed up the body’s natural healing process by flushing out the bad stuff and bringing in the good stuff for faster healing and recovery.

While using our Recovery Systems, your legs or limbs are enclosed in a cuff. The cuff fills with air and squeezes the legs, much like a blood pressure cuff. Then the cuff deflates and relaxes. This inflating and deflating process repeats over and over during the treatment cycle. The compression helps move blood through your veins towards your heart. It also promotes the natural release of substances in your body that help prevent clots. Between compressions, the leg cuffs relax, and oxygen-rich blood continues to flow in the arteries of your legs.

What are the benefits of using Recovery Systems?
  • Increase circulation
  • Accelerates removal of metabolic waste, help muscles recover by ridding them of lactic
    acid build-up
  • Speeds up muscle repair from training
  • Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) Prevention
  • Speeds up recovery, healing and gains from sports training and competition
  • Can be used pre-workout as an effective warmup, and post workout to help muscles
recover, heal and improve faster than rest or massage.
  • Relieves swelling caused by conditions such as DVT, diabetes, lymphoma, edema and
other circulatory issues. (Please consult your medical practitioner first)
How does Recovery Systems promote athletes recovery and also reduce swelling for individuals with swelling conditions?

We designed our products for athletes for home use with the Intermittent Pneumatic Compression technology which employs the inflating and deflating of air that fills the leg cuffs that enclosed the legs. The repeated process of squeezing and releasing of the leg cuffs speed up the elimination of swelling which is a classic symptom post workout.

Aside from faster removal of waste products and delivery of fresh nutrients for faster healing and recovery, it also improves joint awareness, movement efficiency, and more importantly a reduction of soreness, getting you ready for action again, sooner. Most importantly, the recovery process can be done any time at the comfort of your home.

What are the main treatment modes in Recovery Systems, the difference between the Mode A and Mode B?

Mode A – Peristaltic treatment, one chamber/zone of the cuff will inflate and deflate at a time as it progresses up through its cycle to all chambers. Commonly used for medical treatment and management.

Mode B – Sequential treatment, each chamber/ zone will inflate and stay inflated as it progresses through the cycle to all chambers before deflating all chambers at the same time. Commonly used for athlete recovery treatment.

Mode A and B are the main clinically proven treatment modes. Some of our models offer additional modes which are variations of mode A and B to give different massage options.

Does Recovery Systems use ice or cold air in its treatment?
What is the difference between compression garments and intermittent pneumatic compression therapy employed by Recovery Systems?

Static compression garments offer a limited increase in blood flow and have limited effectiveness due to their static nature. With Recovery Systems, the pressure of the squeeze and release function is around 10 times that of static compression, greatly influencing blood flow and the associated healing. It utilizes intermittent compression to speed up the body’s natural recovery process, providing quicker recovery times than traditional solutions alone, including compression socks, massage, or rest.

Uses of our products improve recovery, rehabilitation, mobility, and maintenance of the athlete’s peak condition.

What is the difference between a sports massage and intermittent pneumatic compression therapy employed by Recovery Systems?

With the squeezing and releasing motion that travels up and down your limbs simultaneously, the coverage using Recovery Systems is more than what you’ll receive from a massage. No masseur can massage both of your legs or limbs at the same time, which makes Recovery Systems a highly effective form of recovery.

Also, you can use it at home, you don’t have to make an appointment or travel to a massage center. You can even share within your family, it’s shareable and affordable. It’s definitely good value with affordability and portability, more than what massage can offer.

EQUINE

What is Intermittent Pneumatic Compression? How does it work?

In simple terms, it’s an active compression to speed up the body’s natural healing process by flushing out the bad stuff and bringing in the good stuff for faster healing and recovery.

While using our Recovery Systems Equine Super Boots – E series, the horses legs are enclosed in a wrap. The wrap fills with air and squeezes the legs, much like a blood pressure cuff. Then the wrap deflates and relaxes. This inflating and deflating process repeats over and over during the treatment cycle. The compression helps move blood through the veins towards the heart. It also promotes the natural release of metabolic waste. Between compressions, the leg wraps relax and oxygen-rich blood returns delivering fresh nutrients to speed up recovery.

What result should I expect from Super Boots – E series on my horse?
What are the main treatment modes in Recovery Systems Super Boots – E series, the difference between the Mode A and Mode B?
Mode A - Peristaltic treatment, one chamber/zone of the wraps will inflate and deflate at a time as it progresses up through its cycle to all chambers. It’s commonly prescribed for rehabilitation.
Mode B - Sequential treatment, each chamber/ zone will inflate and stay inflated as it progresses through the cycle to all chambers before deflating all chambers at the same time. It’s commonly used for recovery from training, racing and event, as well as warmup.
Does Recovery Systems Super Boots – E series use ice or cold air in its treatment?

No. Ice or cold air slows the circulation and delays recovery.

In addition, immersing in cold water post-workout can actually hinder muscle recovery, reduced long-term gains in muscle mass and strength. Cold water reduces blood flow to the muscles, inhibiting muscle cell recovery. Cold treatment is mainly used for trauma treatment rather than day to day recovery.

What is the difference between static compression garments and Super Boots – E series intermittent compression?

Static compression wraps produce around 20 mmhg of pressure and offer a limited increase in blood flow as they and have limited effectiveness due to their static nature. With Recovery Systems, the pressure of the squeeze and release function is around 10 times (200 mmhg) that of static compression, greatly influencing blood flow and the associated healing.

Here’s how they work - 2 phases

1: Squeeze Phase
Recovery Systems use a variety of treatment modes to effectively mimic the body’s natural recovery, greatly enhancing the movement of fluid and waste out of the limbs after an intense workout of competition. The active compression helps move blood through the veins towards the heart. The continuous squeeze or compression phase from the lower limbs to upper limbs lasts around 1 minute effectively keeps the fluid moving in the right direction. The pressure is around 10 times that of a static compression wrap and of course it’s moving the blood actively rather than a static squeeze.

2: RELEASE Phase
The release phase of around 20 seconds is between compressions, the leg wraps relax, and oxygen-rich blood continues to flow in the arteries of the legs. Essentially, it speeds up recovery by accelerating the transport of fresh nutrients back to the muscles to speed up healing, recovery and gains. It is a great solution for warmup, recovery from daily training and rehabilitation.

Is Equine Super Boots – E series designed for daily use?

Yes, Super Boots – E series can be used once daily or multiple sessions a day as required.

Can the legs wraps be used on front and hind legs?

Yes, the pair of leg wraps can be either used on the front or the hind legs.
